The Tennessee Titans strengthened their offense by selecting Ohio State wide receiver Carnell Tate with the No. 4 overall selection in the 2026 NFL Draft. It represented an investment in franchise quarterback Cam Ward. Tate's arrival places veteran receiver Calvin Ridley on the hot seat.
Don't look now, but the Titans suddenly feature a stellar depth chart at wide receiver. They signed Wan'Dale Robinson to a $70 million contract in free agency. Sophomores Elic Ayomanor and Chimere Dike also return to the roster after enjoying productive rookie seasons.
Tate is the highest-drafted Titans receiver since the 1965 draft. It's obvious that he's going to play a massive role in Brian Daboll's offense this coming season. That leaves Ridley's future with the franchise in doubt moving forward.
NFL Draft: New Tennessee Titans WR Carnell Tate could make Calvin Ridley a non-factor
The Titans restructured Ridley's contract earlier this offseason. The veteran wideout agreed to a pay reduction to avoid being released. That probably guarantees Ridley will remain on the roster this coming season, but he'll have to earn reps with Tate adding competition to the room.
Restructuring Ridley's contract essentially guarantees the 2026 campaign will be his final one with the Titans. The restructure increased Ridley's scheduled cap hit in 2027 to an impossible $29.7 million. The Titans will inevitably save $22.2 million against the cap when they release him next offseason.
This coming season being Ridley's final one in Nashville was a foregone conclusion long before the Titans chose Tate at No. 4 overall. What potentially changes now is Ridley's immediate role in Daboll's offense. Tate, like Ridley, is flexible enough to play both "X" and "Z" receiver. Robinson is going to be the full-time slot weapon.
The aging Ridley suffered a season-ending injury seven games into 2025. Even before the physical setback, he was failing to live up to expectations. Ridley recorded just 17 receptions for 303 yards and zero touchdowns prior to breaking his fibula in November.
The initial expectation was that the Titans were going to release Ridley this offseason. Instead, they redesigned his contract to keep him around for one more season. Drafting Tate signals the Titans are already preparing for Ridley's eventual departure, and there will be legitimate competition for reps with Ward in the offense, too.
