The Tennessee Titans are on the field this week for a two-day mandatory minicamp period. General manager Mike Borgonzi is also considering making changes to his 90-man roster. The Titans recently worked out an NFL Draft bust, offering him a career lifeline he badly needs.
The Titans had veteran safety Ifeatu Melifonwu in for a workout, according to Mike Garafolo. Melifonwu has been on the comeback trail earlier this month. The former Syracuse standout also tried out for the Seattle Seahawks earlier this month.
The Titans could use additional depth at safety. Borgonzi is studying the possibility of signing Melifonwu. Minicamp represents the perfect opportunity to consider making underrated depth additions to the roster.
Report: Tennessee Titans work out former NFL Draft bust Ifeatu Melifonwu
The Detroit Lions selected Melifonwu with the 101st pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. He had improved his pre-draft stock at the NFL Combine through a 41.5-inch vertical and 11-foot-2 broad jump. Unfortunately, Melifonwu never lived up to expectations in Detroit.
Melifonwu spent last season with the Miami Dolphins. The athletic safety appeared in 16 games with eight starts for the Dolphins, registering 53 tackles, an interception, and a sack. Perhaps there's still some untapped potential for Melifonwu to rescue his NFL career.
The Titans have Amani Hooker and Kevin Winston Jr. as the unquestioned starting safeties. Hooker is an established veteran. Robert Saleh and coaching staff expect Winston to take a major leap as a sophomore.
Everyone behind them is competing for depth roles at safety. The Titans did sign veteran Tony Adams to a one-year contract. Adams previously played for Saleh with the New York Jets, and he's almost a surefire lock to make the 53-man roster.
Undrafted rookie safety Bishop Fitzgerald is another intriguing name at safety. Kendell Brooks, Erick Hallett II, Sanoussi Kane, and Jerrick Reed II are also on the roster. There's more quantity than quality.
If Melifonwu impresses during his workout and ends up actually signing with the Titans, he'll possess an opportunity to compete for a 53-man roster spot behind Hooker and Winston.
