The Tennessee Titans may prioritize experience when conducting their head coaching search. General manager Mike Borgonzi also made comments at last week's press conference that indicate a daily working relationship between himself and the hired coach is imperative to making their partnership a success. There's one clear-cut candidate who checks those boxes.
Current Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy spent eight seasons working alongside Borgonzi in Kansas City via two separate stints. Sandwiched in-between those experiences, Nagy was the Chicago Bears' head coach for four years. His previous experience, paired with his existing relationship with Borgonzi, could make him a strong candidate in Tennessee.
Nagy initially thrived in Chicago, going 12-4 in his debut campaign en route to Coach of the Year honors. The rest of his tenure failed to repeat that success, however. A large portion of the Titans fanbase may be terribly disappointed if Nagy is appointed.
Matt Nagy would be a divisive HC hire for Titans fanbase
Nagy followed his debut 12-win season with consecutive 8-8 campaigns. He was fired after regressing to 4-12 in his fourth season. Nagy's tenure was marked with poor offensive play-calling and execution. The quarterback decisions were even worse.
After it became crystal-clear that Mitchell Trubisky wasn't Nagy's franchise quarterback, the organization brought in a slew of Nagy-approved signal callers. That list included Nick Foles, Andy Dalton, and Justin Fields. Nagy failed to maximize all of them.
This Titans head coaching hire will be about developing sophomore quarterback Cam Ward in 2026. There are questions about Nagy's ability to successfully navigate those challenges. His reputation has greatly benefited from working under a true offensive guru in Andy Reid, who calls plays. The Titans were burned by a similar candidate in Brian Callahan, who too was a non-play-calling OC, though it's worth noting Nagy called plays in Chicago.
Nagy is a valued member of the Chiefs' offensive staff, according to Coach Reid and Patrick Mahomes. His relationship with Borgonzi could make him a front runner in the coaching search, and perhaps he's better-prepared for his second opportunity. If Nagy was appointed, Titans fans would react with mixed reviews.
