Titans' next roster addition might surprise you (but it shouldn't)

Aside from rookie quarterback Cam Ward, cornerback L'Jarius Sneed might be the most important "question mark" on the Tennessee Titans' roster. Sneed possesses game-changing talent, but remains on the PUP. His status could ultimately determine the successes or failures of the Titans' cornerbacks in 2025.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler caused Titans fans to take notice when he mentioned the team would be looking to add an EDGE in free agency. Sure, fans have been begging for that since the end of the 2025 NFL Draft, but the real reason why that was so interesting was because he mentioned a specific veteran the team could be looking at to fill that role.

What got overlooked is that Fowler also said that the Titans are equally interested in adding a cornerback.

Report: Titans looking to add veteran CB amidst L'Jarius Sneed injury

"Tennessee is open to adding on defense via free agency. Pass rusher and corner would be two spots to watch there. One name to watch: veteran defensive end Preston Smith."

Later, Fowler said that the team is very high on young cornerback Jarvis Brownlee Jr., whose performances last year earned him a promotion to full-time starter, prompting the surprising release of Chidobe Awuzie earlier this offseason.

It is a given that Roger McCreary is doing a good job in the slot, so what does that note mean for the Titans? Surely Fowler isn't bringing that up because the Titans are interested in bringing a guy in just to be another body at the position for training camp, right?

Using what we know about the position, everything points back to Sneed, who is currently racing against the clock to be healthy for Week 1. All reports suggest he could return to action sooner rather than later, and that the team is expecting him back during training camp.

However, Brian Callahan has also discussed his need to get up to speed physically to make sure that he is game-ready for the Denver Broncos. If that doesn't happen or if Sneed gets injured at any point during the season, the next man up seems to be Darrell Baker Jr., who is taking first-team reps right now.

Baker is the team's fourth cornerback. Fowler's note also arrived on the same weekend A to Z reporter Easton Freeze tweeted this:

If the Titans do end up signing a veteran cornerback, expect that player to come in and compete for the fourth cornerback job behind the starting trio of Sneed, Brownlee, and McCreary. It seems like the team is begging for someone to take that job, and it would be great for them to get someone in the building quickly so they can hold a legitimate competition at that spot.
