The Tennessee Titans are taking a pretty big risk at the center position. They released two-year starter Lloyd Cushenberry with a failed physical designation earlier this offseason. Veteran journeyman Austin Schlottmann was signed in free agency to be the new center.
Schlottmann previously played for offensive coordinator Brian Daboll and position coach Carmen Bricillo with the New York Giants. That's precisely why the Titans shifted attention to Schlottmann once alternative options dried up. The Titans also signed Andre James recently, but a potentially better choice just disappeared.
An intriguing report from ESPN insider Adam Schefter claimed that veteran center Ethan Pocic recently received medical clearance to resume football activities at training camp. A source told the insider that the center is "full go" and ready for his next opportunity. Pocic just ended up signing a one-year deal with the Baltimore Ravens, with the Titans missing out on a potential upgrade.

Pocic is a nine-year pro who performed admirably for the Cleveland Browns last season. Ironically enough, he suffered a season-ending injury against the Titans in Week 14. It was a torn Achilles tendon, which typically carries a lengthier recovery period. It's interesting to see Pocic signed by an AFC contender so quickly after just receiving clearance to participate in training camp.
The Titans were understandably hesitant to place faith in Pocic. Cushenberry suffered the same injury in his debut 2024 season in Tennessee after signing a $50 million contract with the team earlier that offseason. The Titans watched Cushenberry's abilities slowly diminish before admitting defeat on him.
The Titans appear comfortable rolling with Schlottmann, partially due to his familiarity with Daboll's playbook and scheme. It's a calculated risk, with Schlottmann having started just 18 career games in seven seasons. Meanwhile Pocic is a 97-game starter and former second-round pick out of LSU. He'll be blocking for former Titans running back Derick Henry in Baltimore now.
Schlottmann will receive an opportunity at training camp to quickly repay the Titans' faith in him. Hopefully there aren't any lingering doubts about his availability, because an alternative option just came off the board. Pocic was the best realistic option after clearing a massive roadblock in his recovery, but the Ravens quickly scooped him up.
