The best way to help a rookie quarterback is by surrounding him with a great supporting cast, and that includes a defense that will keep games tight when the offense is struggling. The Tennessee Titans saw that in Week 1 when the defense kept them alive despite the offense lacking a pulse, but that result isn't sustainable for one key reason.
Even in a game where the Titans forced four turnovers, the EDGEs were a non-factor.
According to Jim Wyatt, Jeffery Simmons had four pressures on Sunday, which was more than all other EDGEs combined (three). The team plans to get to the quarterback through twists, stunts, simulated pressures, and blitzes, which means the numbers might be slightly distorted. However, just watching the EDGEs play on Sunday was uninspiring, and it is clear that they weren't productive enough.
Titans' final opportunity to upgrade at the EDGE position is about to disappear
The lack of a pass-rush isn't a new problem. Titans fans have been asking for the team to make a meaningful addition here for months. While they were connected to Preston Smith before the preseason began, there has been no additional news on that front in a long time, and whatever buzz was there has died off.
Meanwhile, two of the remaining free-agent EDGEs signed deals, taking them off the market. Matthew Judon signed with the Miami Dolphins, and Za'Darius Smith signed with the Philadelphia Eagles. That left Jadeveon Clowney as the one proven EDGE on the market who could sign with a team and make an impact.
Unfortunately, it was the Dallas Cowboys who called Clowney instead of the Titans.
Confirming @JosinaAnderson report that the #Cowboys are working out former No. 1 overall pick Jadeveon Clowney, a defensive end strong against the run with some pass-rush skills.

He is being considered for immediate addition to the roster, depending upon his workout and medical…
While a deal hasn't been signed, the Titans' complete lack of interest in the position suggests that they are out of the market completely. That is a buzzkill because Dennard Wilson's unit looked great on Sunday, and that might be the group that keeps them in games while Cam Ward's supporting cast struggles to help out the young quarterback.
If Coach Wilson wants his defense to keep dominating, the Titans have to improve that position. Considering Wilson's past experience with Clowney, this is his last chance to stand on the table for a guy who could make a difference on defense.

Jobs are on the line in Tennessee, and failing to address the EDGE position will be something that these coaches have to address if things go south. It seems like a no-brainer to make a move for Clowney, but then again, even things that seem like no-brainers are puzzling this franchise right now.
