Titans could reunite Cam Ward with former Miami teammate (but not who you think)

The Tennessee Titans were tasked with submitting their initial 53-man roster by Tuesday's mid-afternoon deadline. The 31 competing franchises were busy achieving the same. There were several happenings at running back for general manager Mike Borgonzi.

Tyjae Spears was placed on IR as a result of his high-ankle sprain. Spears will miss a minimum of four regular-season contests. Elsewhere, the Titans waived Jordan Mims and Jermar Jefferson, sources confirmed to Titan Sized.

The Titans kept Julius Chestnut and Kalel Mullings at running back behind starter Tony Pollard. Mullings suffered a minor injury in the preseason finale. If the Titans are looking to add another ball-carrier to their roster, they could consider reuniting rookie quarterback Cam Ward with his former Miami Hurricanes teammate, Damien Martinez.

Martinez was downright dominant alongside Ward for the Hurricanes offense last season. He rushed for 1,002 yards and a career-high 10 touchdowns while averaging 6.3 yards per carry. Together, Ward and Martinez helped oversee one of the most explosive units in the country.

Martinez was drafted at No. 223 overall in the seventh round by the Seattle Seahawks. Martinez was waived by the Seahawks on Tuesday, however. Seattle kept George Holani as the RB3 behind Kenneth Walker III and Zach Charbonnet instead.

As a rookie, Martinez is subject to the waivers claim process. The Titans own the No. 1 priority on the wire after finalizing their initial 53-man roster. If Borgonzi is intrigued by reuniting Ward with Martinez, nothing can stop him.

Alternatively, the Titans could offer Martinez a spot on their practice squad, where they'll add at least one ball-carrier later this week. He could then decide between joining's Tennessee practice squad and staying put in Seattle. The Titans are limping into the regular season at running back, and there's an opportunity to reunite Ward and Martinez on the same team.
