The Robert Saleh Era of the Tennessee Titans is still in its earliest stages, and only a month into his tenure, the vibes around the team, the media's opinions of the organization, and the overall mood of the fanbase have all been significantly improved. This could be partially due to outstanding staff hires and overt hints at new uniforms on social media, but much of the positivity following Saleh's hire comes directly from the man himself.
It is the same indefinable charm, instant charisma, and consistent positivity that Saleh has exuded at every stop along his football journey. But make no mistake, although Saleh's presence and charisma have contributed to his success in the NFL, the Titans did not hire a motivational speaker or YouTube life coach to lead their franchise. He's a man with a deep understanding of the game, an innovative way of strategizing, and a commitment to the growth of his players.
How do we know all this? Well, to get an idea of who the new coach is (aside from his role in Hard Knocks: Aaron Rodgers), we looked back at what some of his former colleagues, players, rivals, and bosses had to say.
Gus Bradley - Titans Defensive Coordinator

One of the most interesting dynamics to watch this season will be between Defensive Coordinator and former Saleh mentor, Gus Bradley and his new boss. The innovator behind the "Seattle defense," which took the Legion of Boom to two Super Bowls and is now the standard Cover 3 system on many teams, Bradley first met Saleh in 2011. As the defensive coordinator for Seattle, Bradley was interviewing candidates for a quality control job and said Saleh "almost made me feel like I was a fool if I didn’t hire him.”
When speaking of Saleh's own input into the defense, Bradley said, “He was an idea guy…he always had a way to take the system and tweak it just enough to stay ahead of the game.”
Kyle Shanahan - SF 49ers Head Coach

Kyle Shanahan respected and appreciated Saleh so much he hired him twice. But before he was recognized as one of the best head coaches in the sport, Shanahan was simply a fresh head coach hire with a brilliant offensive mind, a famous name, and a need for someone to he could trust to run the defense.
Following the first time Saleh was hired as the 49ers DC in 2017, Shanahan said it was an "easy decision." He went on to say, "I know the path he's taken and the people he's been around. I know how valuable he was to Pete Carrol's staff in Seattle. I know how valuable he was to Gus in Jacksonville. Saleh's a very smart guy who can understand any scheme."
George Kittle - SF 49ers Tight End

George Kittle may be one of the most entertaining and charismatic players in the league, but no one can doubt his football IQ. When Saleh was re-hired as the 49ers DC before the 2025 season, he called it the team's "best signing." As far as what Saleh would bring to the team, Kittle put it simply and beautifully, as only he can:
"Violence is coming is what I would say."George Kittle
Mike McDaniel - LA Chargers Offensive Coordinator

Mike McDaniel's story of his first meeting with Saleh is just wonderful. However, for anyone who has ever seen a McDaniel press conference, you can understand why I have no intention of transcribing it here. It sounds so much better from him anyway:
DeMeco Ryans - Houston Texans Head Coach

Once his former boss and now his newest rival in the AFC South, Ryans was effusive in his praise of Saleh when he became the head coach of the Texans.
"Working with Robert, he truly showed me what it takes to coach: the detail, the fine details, the small things that it takes as a coach. How you have to be deliberate in your preparation. How are you saying things to players? Not just relaying a lot of information to them, but how are you truly teaching it? How do you understand each guy in your room? How do you teach it different? So, Robert Saleh, he taught me all of that of what it takes to be a good coach. I’m so blessed and thankful to have learned under him, because he’s such a meticulous, detailed person. Not just in coaching, but in life. I’ve learned a lot from him and I’m thankful for all the things that he’s taught me. It’s the reason why I’m here right now, because he spent the time to teach me those things."DeMeco Ryans
The Future in Tennessee
Obviously, this was only a very small handful of the men who have influenced and been influenced by Robert Saleh in his football journey. With the next leg of that journey upon us, it's easy to get excited about what the future may bring.
