Recent NFL trend is not encouraging for Brian Callahan's job security

Matt Eberflus, 2024

This is the most recent example and yet another that we could have seen going downhill from the very start. Eberflus was a defensive-minded coach going into the 2024 season already on the hot seat, so he never made much sense to be the guy to oversee the development of Caleb Williams.

His game management skills were horrendous, and we could talk about several instances, but the only one anyone needs to consider was the disaster on Thanksgiving Day in Detroit. Not only did he let the final 30 seconds of the clock run down when he had a timeout, he outright defended it.

It is not often that you see a singular mistake that is a truly fireable offense, but that one gaffe told everyone everything that they needed to know about Eberflus. It rightfully bought him his ticket out of Chicago.

Brian Callahan, on the other hand, is an offensive-minded guy, and unlike Eberflus, has shown several instances of genuine open-mindedness, even for all his shortcomings. That alone buys Callahan more respect, and if he does fail in 2025, it will not be for the same reasons Eberflus did in 2024.
