3. Houston Texans

They are a very intriguing franchise that went from a combined 11-39-1 record from 2020-22, to 10 wins and a division title this past season. First-time NFL head coach DeMeco Ryans got bigger debuts from quarterback C.J. Stroud and edge rusher Will Anderson Jr., both earning Rookie of the Year accolades.

It was another solid offseason for general manager Nick Caserio. The defense added pass-rushers Danielle Hunter (Vikings) and Denico Autry (Titans), and the Texans swung a deal for four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Stefon Diggs. Is this the year that this franchise gets past the divisional round in the playoffs?

2. Cincinnati Bengals

The Bengals were a pretty good last place team in 2023 as the AFC North featured four clubs with winning records. The Ravens, Browns, and Steelers all reached the playoffs, but Zac Taylor’s club missed out with a 9-8 record. The club got off to a rough start and that’s while quarterback Joe Burrow was still healthy.

It was Cincinnati’s defense that was a season-long problem as the team managed to keep its head above water with backup quarterback Jake Browning. The addition of Pro Bowler Geno Stone and the return of Vonn Bell bodes well for the secondary. Veteran tackle Trent Brown could tutor rookie Amarius Mims.

1. Detroit Lions

It’s a team that has been reconstructed in the right way via the trenches. Yes, quarterback Jared Goff and the Detroit offense was impressive last year and its balance was superb. However, a Lions’ defensive unit that started out the season strong faded quickly during the second half and had its issues in the playoffs.

So why is Dan Campbell’s club at the top of the list? That postseason experience from a year ago could pay big dividends. Being pushed in the improving NFC North is a plus as well. General manager Brad Holmes used free agency to bolster that defense, and guard Kevin Zeitler is a huge addition up front.
