PFF urges Titans to make one final offensive acquisition ahead of training camp

Do the Tennessee Titans need to consider signing another offensive tackle before training camp begins?

The Tennessee Titans will enter training camp later this July feeling really good about their offensive line from left tackle to center. General manager Ran Carthon drafted J.C. Latham to fix the left tackle position. Sophomore first-rounder Peter Skoronski is expected to show growth at left guard, and free-agent signing Lloyd Cushenberry should solidify the center spot.

On top of the promise those players carry, they'll be coached by legendary offensive line coach Bill Callahan.

The right side of the offensive line has significantly more concerning questions. Modest free-agent acquisition Saahdiq Charles appears to be leading the charge at right guard, though Daniel Brunskill and Dillon Radunz are putting forth valiant efforts, too. Third-year offensive tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere appears to be the in-house favorite at right tackle, which is arguably the more concerning of the two issues.

That's precisely why Pro Football Focus is urging the Titans to sign a veteran offensive tackle before the team reports to training camp on July 23rd.

"The Titans' offensive line has been in the repair shop for a few seasons," PFF correctly summarized. "They could still use some tackle depth, and maybe even someone to push Nicholas Petit-Frere at right tackle.

The free-agent tackle market is filled with veterans like David Bakhtiari, D.J. Humphries and Charles Leno, though all three are predominantly left tackles. There are further options like Cam Erving, Billy Turner and Conor McDermott who could challenge, but either way, the depth is necessary," Thomas Valentine concluded.

Petit-Frere was to be last year's Week 1 starter at right tackle, but he missed several games after being suspended for violating the league's gambling policy. Veteran signing Chris Hubbard replaced him. Hubbard handled himself appropriately before suffering a season-ending injury. He's since joined the San Francisco 49ers via free agency.

Petit-Frere did not perform admirably when he returned from his suspension. He managed just 117 offensive snaps before suffering a season-ending shoulder injury. Petit-Frere did not fare well in limited action, allowing 3.0 sacks, 11 pressures, and five QB hits via just 66 pass-blocking snaps. He was also whistled for four penalties.

The Titans have other players in the mix at right tackle, but they inspire even less confidence than Petit-Frere does. Sophomore blocker Jaelyn Duncan will attempt to push the former Ohio State blocker on the right side now that Latham is the solution on the left. The Titans also acquired Leroy Watson and Geron Christian earlier this summer, two tackles that previously played for Bill Callahan.

Petit-Frere missed the on-field portion of OTAs and mandatory minicamp, presumably still rehabbing last season's shoulder injury. It's imperative he's healthy and available when the Titans report to training camp in approximately two weeks. Carthon could consider adding one of the veterans mentioned by PFF in the meantime.
