The Tennessee Titans made headlines last offseason by signing wide receiver Xavier Restrepo in undrafted free agency. Restrepo was a go-to weapon for No. 1 overall quarterback Cam Ward. Immediately, fans began dreaming about their connection carrying over to the NFL.
That's not exactly how it happened. Once training camp began, it became evident that Restrepo was buried on the depth chart. Unsurprisingly, Restrepo didn't make the initial 53-man roster, but earned a spot on the practice squad.
Restrepo finally earned his opportunities in Weeks 12 and 13, connecting with Ward on a few viral receptions. Now heading into his sophomore season, Restrepo will enter training camp on the roster bubble for a second consecutive offseason. The latest update does not bode well for his chances.
Latest Xavier Restrepo update paints brutal picture of his Tennessee Titans roster chances
The Titans held rookie minicamp this past weekend. The draft picks spent their time getting acclimated with the strength and conditioning staff. The undrafted free agents were on the field, and the Titans hosted more than 50 undrafted prospects on a minicamp tryout basis.
Five veteran Titans also participated at rookie minicamp. None of them are expected to make the 53-man roster. Restrepo was one of the participants, indicating he's viewed as a back-end player even on the 90-man offseason roster.
The depth chart at wide receiver is crowded. The Titans drafted Carnell Tate at No. 4 overall. Wan'Dale Robinson was paid $70 million in free agency. Calvin Ridley had his contract restructured. Two sophomores in Chimere Dike and Elic Ayomanor are expected to take steps forward.
Barring disaster, those five receivers are guaranteed 53-man roster spots and the Titans may not keep a sixth or seventh. If six is the magic number, Bryce Oliver is viewed internally as an excellent special teams player. Restrepo then joins a jumbled group of veterans like Mason Kinsey and KJ Osborn trying to compete.
Joining Restrepo at rookie minicamp were fellow veterans Keydrain Calligan, David Ebuka Agoha, Hal Presley III, and Joel Wilson. Not exactly a well-known list of Titans players. Perhaps Titans fans need to start admitting Restrepo is that caliber of player.
