At 0-4 and showing little signs of improvement, it's safe to say that the Tennessee Titans will be sellers at the trade deadline. A player who will become a popular name for the Titans to ship off before the deadline is long-time Titan Jeffery Simmons. That's exactly who Matt Verderame and Gilberto Manzano of Sports Illustrated proposed the team should trade.
While Verderame and Manzano technically listed Simmons as a trade target for the Bears, it would still involve the Titans obviously. The two proposed that the Titans should send Simmons to Chicago in exchange for a second-round pick.
"The arrival of Simmons would immediately improve the Bears’ defense, which needs pass rushers and run stoppers. Simmons excels in both areas and could form a dominant duo with edge rusher Montez Sweat. For years, the Bears’ defense has done the heavy lifting. Now that the offense is showing signs of improvement, the defense has regressed. Simmons can help balance out Chicago’s problems this season."
Titans could look to trade Jeffery Simmons ahead of the deadline
While, on paper, this seems like a trade that makes sense, the contract situation could scare some teams away from acquiring Simmons. The Bears would have to rework some of their cap space situation for this year but if they're desperate enough to add the defensive help that Simmons could provide, one would have to think they'll do whatever maneuvering is needed to make it happen.
In exchange, the Titans would get a second round pick and that's great draft capital for a rebuilding team to have. Again, Tennessee clearly isn't going anywhere positive this season. The team is 0-4 and coming off a shutout blowout loss to the Texans, who had also been winless going into that game.
There was some hope that the Titans could at least show some progress this year but with the deadline a month away, selling off assets is the right approach and Simmons needs to be in those conversations. It'd be weird to see the former first-round pick wearing another team's jersey but all good things come to an end, as they say.
If the Titans can get a high draft pick in exchange for Simmons, who is playing at a Defensive Player of the Year level this season, they should consider that opportunity, if the offer is tempting. No time like the present.
