Former Titans HC admits lying to national media on eve of being fired
By Ryan Heckman
Let's take it back a few years to when the Tennessee Titans were once a relevant, playoff football team.
The 2017 Titans finished with a record of 9-7 led by quarterback Marcus Mariota and head coach Mike Mularkey.
Earning a Wild Card bid, the Titans would go on to defeat the Kansas City Chiefs who were led by Alex Smith, under center, for the very last time before Patrick Mahomes would take the reigns. After beating Kansas City, the Titans went on to face Tom Brady and the New England Patriots in the Divisional Round.
Tennessee ultimately lost that one, which general manager Jon Robinson and owner Amy Adams Strunk used as their excuse to fire Mularkey and eventually move on to Mike Vrabel as his replacement.

What many Titans fans don't know about that specific time period, though, is that Mularkey's firing didn't quite get reported as originally planned. You might remember the night after losing to New England, reports started leaking of Mularkey, in fact, getting a contract extension.
The following morning, though, the polar opposite came to fruition as Mularkey was fired. What happened behind the scenes will have fans laughing hysterically.
Mike Mularkey used his impending firing as an opportunity to get back at the front office
In a recent interview, Mularkey detailed the fact that he felt Tennessee's front office was out to get him that year. Following the postseason loss to New England, Mularkey decided to take matters into his own hands, albeit for just a short while.
"The best thing I did there, at the end, which I can now talk about, was ... when I got called in that Monday morning after the New England game, I knew they were going to fire me," Mularkey told Action Sports Jacksonville.
"So, Sunday night, I called Ian Rapoport and I said, 'Hey I don't know if you know this, but I'm going to break it to you. I'm getting a new contract in the morning,'" Mularkey said as he began to chuckle.
"He reported it. It was all over the country that I was getting a contract in the morning ... knowing that I was gonna get fired. But I just wanted to see the faces on the owner and the GM who was out to get me, and I'm pretty sure I got them for a minute or two," Mularkey finished.
So, although Mularkey was indeed fired, the former Titans head coach was able to get one last laugh and jab in at the front office before being escorted from the organization.
With the current state of the Titans, it's safe to say fans needed this type of laugh today.
