The Tennessee Titans continued to move on from the mistakes of the previous regime during roster cut-down day. Submitting his initial 53-man roster, GM Mike Borgonzi waived several Ran Carthon draft picks. One of the more notable departures was tight end Josh Whyle.
The Titans selected Whyle in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft, the first (and only) draft overseen by Carthon and Mike Vrabel. Whyle occasionally flashed as a rookie, posting nine receptions for 94 yards and a touchdown. The former Cincinnati standout was better as a sophomore, totaling 28 catches for 248 yards.
Titans fans expected Whyle to take a sizable step forward that year, even wondering if he could overthrow Chig Okonkwo for the TE1 role. That projection came nowhere near coming true. Borgonzi and the new regime quickly soured on Whyle, waiving him during final cuts, though he quickly found a new home after mulling multiple options.
Former Titans TE Josh Whyle finds instant redemption after being waived
Whyle signed with the Green Bay Packers' practice squad, the team recently confirmed. Opportunities to reach the active roster will be difficult to come by, barring injury. The Packers are loaded at the position, with recent draft picks Tucker Kraft and Luke Musgrave commanding the top two roles.
Whyle wouldn't be the first Titans draft mistake to revive his career in Titletown. Current Packers backup quarterback Malik Willis has looked far better in Green Bay since they acquired him in a trade with the Titans. Whyle hopes to follow a similar path.
The Titans soured on Whyle. David Martin-Robinson surpassed him on the depth chart for the TE3 spot behind Okonkwo and impressive rookie Gunnar Helm. The Titans even have two tight ends on the practice squad, having recently added Drake Dabney and Thomas Odukoya.
At least Whyle quickly found a new home.
