Everyone saw this ugly Titans trend unfolding except GM Mike Borgonzi

Why couldn't the Titans see this coming?

The Tennessee Titans struggled to rush the passer throughout 2024. Dennard Wilson's unit recorded the third-fewest sacks (32.0) in the league. General manager Mike Borgonzi took over a roster that desperately needed upgrades in that department.

The Titans' offseason activities didn't signal a sense of urgency, however. Despite possessing ample cap space and financial flexibility, they released 2024 sack leader Harold Landry from his contract. Landry is currently thriving with the New England Patriots.

Borgonzi didn't treat the EDGE position with the care it so obviously required. Dre'Mont Jones was signed to a modest one-year contract following his release from the Seattle Seahawks. Femi Oladejo, who most scouts agreed was a project player after undergoing a midseason position switch at UCLA, was drafted in the second round. Unsurprisingly, the Titans are one of the worst pass-rushing teams in the NFL in 2025.

Titans are getting the pass-rushing results they deserve after offseason of inactivity

The Titans have recorded four sacks heading into Week 5, tied for second-fewest in the NFL. Averaging one sack per game is totally ineffective. Even the advanced metrics agree, with the Titans placing near the bottom in pressure rates across various platforms.

Jones and Oladejo, Borgonzi's two offseason acquisitions at the position, have combined for zero sacks. Using minimum snap qualifiers, Jones ranks 66th among NFL EDGEs in pass-rush-win-rate (11.6%), per Pro Football Focus. Oladejo ranks 99th (6.7%).

The Titans are 0-4 and on pace for a top-three selection in the 2026 NFL Draft. A premium pass rusher (or two) is a necessity. Miami's Reuben Bain Jr. is an early contender to be the Titans' first-round pick.

Everyone saw the Titans' pass-rushing struggles coming, seemingly except for Borgonzi. Borgonzi is rebuilding the roster slowly and patiently, but all three major decisions made at EDGE (Landry, Jones, Oladejo) have gone against the Titans so far. It was obvious to everyone but the decision makers.
