Much has been made about Cam Ward being an overlooked No. 1 pick for the Tennessee Titans, but in Nashville, all eyes have been on him during OTAs, and everyone likes what they’re seeing. Of course, it’s early, and just OTAs, but the rookie quarterback has been as advertised in the limited action that media members have been able to watch him practice. During Wednesday’s open practice, he had multiple impressive moments, but he delivered one throw that had everyone buzzing.

Terry McCormick, who was in attendance, detailed the throw in a recent piece highlighting key observations from the practice. McCormick explained that it came on Ward’s very first snap of 7-on-7, and the young quarterback zipped a ball over the middle between multiple defenders to find Gunnar Helm.

"Ward zipped a bullet that turned heads on his very first snap of 7-on-7, finding fellow rookie Gunnar Helm on a route over the middle. The ball split two defenders and went right to Helm, who caught it in stride. It was a glimpse of what Titans personnel no doubt saw in Ward that made them take him No.1 overall."

Cam Ward is already turning heads with his arm talent

McCormick made sure to explain that this beautiful throw wasn’t Ward’s only high of the day, expressing that he had other impressive throws as well, and that his quick release was very noticeable.

However, it is important to remember that Ward is a rookie— albeit, a talented one —so there will be lows in addition to his highs. While the bullet to Helm over the middle was the rookie QB’s best pass, McCormick also detailed his worst throw of the day, explaining a play in 11-on-11 where Ward was under pressure and attempted another pass over the middle. This time, the ball didn’t whizz by defenders, instead hitting linebacker Curtis Jacobs’ hand in what could’ve been an interception.

Those are the highs and lows that Ward and the Titans will have to navigate as he works to become an elite quarterback that will help the team win games. The hope is that he’ll ultimately have more highs than lows.
