In four out of the five games for the Tennessee Titans, quarterback Cam Ward has thrown for under 200 yards and he has 1:1 TD:INT ratio. In fact, Ward has averaged under five yards per throw in two games, which includes in Week 5 against the Houston Texans. Not to mention, he's had just 1 game where he had more touchdowns than interceptions.
Long story short, Ward has been off to a horrible start which may have fans by surprise. When the Titans had hired Brian Daboll as the offensive coordinator, a lot of people had thought that Ward would highly elevate his game considering the reputation that Daboll had as a playcaller.
Through 5 games, the Titans offense looks absolutely horrendous and there might even be people out there saying that it's time for the Titans to consider a QB change, whether it's in the short-term or moving forward after 2026. However, Dan Graziano from ESPN believes that if anyone is thinking that the Titans are going to be looking for another quarterback in the 2027 NFL Draft, it's an overreaction at this point.
ESPN: Don't expect Titans to look for 2027 quarterback (yet)
"This was a close one, but I'm still going to give Ward and Daboll a chance to show more than they have. Ward wasn't a controversial No. 1 pick. Many people around the league believed at the time (and entering this season) that he had the tools and the makeup to be a franchise quarterback. He has had five lousy games in a new system, and I understand feeling discouraged. But the Titans have no reason to bench Ward. He gets 12 more games to show he can still be the guy they believed him to be when they drafted him. That's a lot of games. If you believed in Ward two months ago, it's too soon to give up." Graziano wrote.
In all fairness to Ward, his head coach in his rookie season was fired halfway through the season, and then he had a new scheme along with a new coaching staff that he had to adjust to.
However, what makes it a tough is that the coaching staff that the Titans brought in all have head coaching experience from Robert Saleh, Brian Daboll, and Gus Bradley so you would think that there would be some kind of immediate success with the development of Ward.
With this start that Ward is off to, each week where he struggles and doesn't put up great numbers will be another week where people will be thinking whether or not the Titans should be going in a different direction at quarterback next season.
There is still plenty of football to be played, but with the Titans being at 0-5, the main focus right now should just be on the development of Ward to see if he can truly be the franchise quarterback for Tennessee. If he continues these struggles, the chatter that is happening now is only going to get louder.
