The Tennessee Titans have worked diligently to build around franchise quarterback Cam Ward this offseason, including kicking off the 2026 NFL Draft with a bang. After months of speculation, the club selected standout Ohio State wide receiver Carnell Tate with the No. 4 overall pick.

Talk about a shocking development. Tate's arrival is great, albeit surprising news for the Titans. He will be a critical piece of their long-term future and form a dynamic duo with Ward in Tennessee for a long time.

There were several top-tier prospects available when Tennessee was on the clock. They could’ve gone in a variety of directions, but the opportunity to snag Tate was ultimately too much to pass up. His combination of physicality, smooth route-running and strong hands align nicely with the big-armed Ward's skill set.

Titans give Cam Ward huge boost with surprising Carnell Tate selection

Evidently, the Titans learned about the importance of surrounding Ward, the 2024 No. 1 choice, with playmakers the hard way. He struggled mightily and had minimal help as a rookie. Tate gives him a reliable weapon to grow with.

Across 11 games in 2025, Tate caught 51 passes for 875 yards (17.2 yards per reception) and nine touchdowns. His competitive toughness and consistency were on full display, and Ohio State leaned on him as an efficient chain-mover in their high-powered offense. He posted 35 first downs and a dazzling 151.8 passer rating when targeted (per Pro Football Focus).

Tate is capable of winning on all three levels. His collegiate résumé may not jump off the screen, but that's what an incredibly crowded Ohio State receiver room can do. Nevertheless, he has the tools to make an immediate impact in the pros and develop into a star.

A wide catch radius and ability to create separation enable Tate to thrive as a serious deep threat. He can track balls and box out defenders at the point of attack. His strength and crafty footwork make him a high-floor, high-upside option for Ward and the Titans.
