Tennessee Titans fans are learning quickly that rookie quarterback Cam Ward isn’t one to hold his tongue. He calls things how he sees them, and seemingly shares the first thing that comes to his mind. That was recently on display on Tuesday, when he assessed the Titans’ offensive performance through training camp so far.

The first-overall pick bluntly said the unit was “very mid right now.” For those that don’t know, mid means average, ordinary, or run of the mill— though, it has taken on a bit more of a negative connotation lately, with some using the term to criticize things they even consider below average. Point is, Ward made it abundantly clear that Tennessee’s offense isn’t in a good spot right now.

The quarterback said things just aren’t going smoothly right now from his position, to the lineman, to the receivers and running backs. However, he made clear to express that everything starts with him. He needs to do a better job leading the offense to where they want to be, so he’s happy they have time to get everything figured out.

While this isn’t the best thing to hear, it’s certainly not surprising. For starters, defenses typically start ahead of offenses, so it makes sense the defense is getting the best of the offense in camp. Additionally, Tennessee has only been in camp for two weeks. With a rookie quarterback under center, and several other newcomers, it was always going to take time for the unit to get on the same page.

Ideally, the Titans would love to have everything figured out by the time the regular season arrives, but even that’s asking a lot. Teams have to improve week by week in camp, but it’s rare for any team to arrive at Week 1 in peak form. Tennessee just has to navigate the growing pains and work to get better every day.
