Just when it looked like the Tennessee Titans were going to give the Denver Broncos a great degree of consternation in their season-opening duel, the weather seemingly tried to step in and ensure that Cam Ward is unable to complete the comeback in his NFL debut.
The game went into a weather delay, at least officially. The odd thing about this delay was the fact that ot was called heading into halftime, and the delay was ended almost instantly. In other words, both teams got a few extra minutes in the locker room at halftime. Maybe that long layoff could have messed with Denver's momentum.
Right after the delay, the Titans intercepted Nix for the second time in this game. Former Cowboys and Panthers safety Xavier Woods came up with the pick, as an ill-advised throw by Nix into tight coverage led to another turnover. Ward ended up taking advantage of that mistake from Nix.
While Ward was unable to move the ball against a Broncos defense that is as good as it gets, Joey Slye was able to convert what was his fourth made field goal of the game to put the Titans up 12-10 in a game no one thought they would be winning at halftime. The weather delay may have gotten the Broncos ever so slightly out of whack.
Titans pick off Bo Nix, convert field goal after odd weather delay in close Week 1 game
According to AccuWeather, Denver doesn't have any thunderstorms in the forecast after 5 PM local time, all of which bodes well for the game not being impacted by the elements. Titans fans want to make sure that they can continue this game as soon as possible, as Ward and the offense were making some plays.
Ward led his team to a one-point deficit at halftime, and four field goals have provided all of the scoring in this game. Against a Broncos defense that many consider to be the best in the league, Tennessee should feel fairly confident about its performance in this one.
In the 2024 season, this would have been a situation where the Titans folded and failed to capitalize on the gift that Denver gave them. Perhaps the fact that Dennard Wilson's defense was able to take advantage of Nix's poor play and Ward led his team to points for a fourth time shows that things are starting to turn.
