The Tennessee Titans are entering this week's mandatory minicamp with major questions at off-ball linebacker. Free-agent signing Cody Barton is the lone unquestioned starter at the position. The other spot is expected to be decided by a position battle between sophomores Cedric Gray and James Williams.

Defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson and linebackers coach Frank Bush are invested in developing Gray and Williams. Though it was former GM Ran Carthon who drafted both players, it was Wilson and Bush who coached them throughout their rookie campaigns. With them having played so little though, the Titans should explore opportunities to sign someone with proven credentials, if one happens to be available.

And one major development around the league shouldn't go unnoticed by the Titans.

Titans must explore signing Germaine Pratt after stunning release

The Cincinnati Bengals are reportedly releasing veteran linebacker Germaine Pratt. Pratt has long been rumored to depart the Bengals this offseason. With no willing trade partner revealing itself, both parties decided to officially split ways.

Titans head coach Brian Callahan spent five seasons alongside Pratt with the Bengals (2019-23). Though Callahan was the offensive coordinator and had little-to-no input on the defense, he arrived in Cincinnati the same offseason Pratt did. Given all the yearly turnover in the NFL, spending five campaigns with a player will help you build a relationship.

Pratt could also check GM Mike Borgonzi's boxes in free agency. Borgonzi's acquisitions had certain themes in common this offseason. The Titans' new decision-maker pursued veteran leadership and durability. Pratt ranked in the top 10 in the NFL last season in tackles (143) and was a team captain, appearing in all 17 regular-season games.

Furthermore, the Titans' AFC South rival Indianapolis Colts could be interested in his services. New Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo was Pratt's DC in Cincinnati. That's some added incentive for the Titans to possibly pursue Pratt.

The Titans have so many unknowns at linebacker. Joining Gray and Williams in the position room are Otis Reese IV and undrafted free agent signing David Gbenda, among others lesser-known players. Both Reese and Gbenda could push for playing time. There are no sure things outside of Barton.

No team was willing to part with draft capital and absorb Pratt's existing contract. Now the veteran defender has been released and there should be a lengthy queue of suitors willing to pursue him, including the Colts. Callahan's familiarity with Pratt could give the Titans an advantage.
