One of the most overlooked positions in football is the backup quarterback, believe it or not. We focus so much on who the starters are, but different scenarios like bad play and injuries at the quarterback position and teams are sometimes forced to start their backups.
Backups are backups for a reason, but they should be able to provide some of the value that the starter has. Despite taking 55 sacks in his rookie season, Cam Ward managed to start all 17 games, but he missed a majority of the Titans’ final game after being knocked out with a shoulder injury.
The Titans have a ton of areas to fix on both sides of the ball, but Mike Borgonzi really needs to figure out who could be a quality backup for Ward. Brandon Allen is not only set to be a free agent, but there are better potential options that Tennessee can explore to not only backup Ward, but support him as well.
Who should Titans strongly consider bringing in to backup Cam Ward?
Trey Lance
Unless the Chargers are able to bring Trey Lance back, he is set to hit the open market and he would be able to not only provide Ward support, but also push Ward to grow as a player. Lance is still a young player who hasn’t had the career that was expected of him being a former 3rd overall pick.
Depending on who the head coach that the Titans hire, they may want to challenge Ward and bring in some QB competition for the preseason. Not only would Lance do that, but he would be a quality backup who has had some flashes, just not enough to be a true starter.
Mitch Trubisky
Mitch Trubisky is more than likely going to be a backup for the rest of his career, but never say never. He’s been with the Buffalo Bills the last two seasons and he put on a show for the Bills in Week 18 against the Jets. He threw for 259 yards and 4 touchdowns in the 35-8 beatdown over the Jets.
This is his second stint with the Bills and maybe he’ll continue to backup Josh Allen. If not though, he would be a quality veteran backup for Ward.
Tyrod Taylor
Tyrod Taylor has been a starter and backup throughout his career, and has recently been with the New York Jets. He has bounced around the league in recent years and maybe he has a few more seasons left. If he does and the Jets opt to let him walk in free agency, he might just be the best support system for Ward in the Titans’ quarterback room.
Out of these three options, Taylor has the most experience and has seen so much throughout his career. His experience would be extremely beneficial for Ward. Not to mention, Taylor is a fantastic teammate as well.
