Trade for Jason Verrett CB, San Francisco

Another CB, Verrett is similar to Stephon Gilmore in that he is:

-A little older

-Will be looking for a new contract after this season

-Likely is only going to be available because of his current team’s record

-Fits what the Titans will do.

The reason that you haven’t heard his name mentioned is, up until this morning, there was every reason to expect the 49ers to make another playoff run. Sure, they had some bumps in the road, but with expanded playoffs, they were still a good bet to make it in.

Well, now the 49ers are without their starting quarterback for weeks and George Kittle is going to be out for the next 8 weeks with a foot injury. That changes the outlook for a team that is already behind the pack in the playoff race.

Verrett is a cornerback who moves around the defense and to this point he has actually played 164 snaps on the left side and 159 on the right side. That is about as balanced as it gets, and he has been fantastic doing it.

Normally you would think that the 49ers would be patient and wait for the compensatory pick they might get, but Verrett could get injured at any moment.

Verrett was drafted in 2014, and in 7 years he has missed more games than he has played, by an astounding 32 to 80 games.

That isn’t someone you depend on, and it isn’t going to be someone that gets a huge contract in the offseason. That means that the comp pick would be a late-round pick at best.

Tennessee has learned that cornerback play is crucial to this defense because the coaching staff doesn’t have any idea how to function without great cornerback play protecting their bad play calls. Double or triple dipping in the CB market might be worth it at the right price.
