Why the Panthers would trade Samuel.

If you haven’t seen much of the Carolina Panthers over the last few years, you might be wondering why the Panthers would trade Curtis Samuel despite spending a top-40 pick on him just three years ago.

Well, a better question might be why haven’t the Panthers used him this year?

Last year Samuel played more snaps than anyone other than the Panthers starting center, right tackle and McCaffery, but this year he is third on the depth chart behind D.J. Moore and Robby Anderson.

Samuel is 5th on the Panthers with just 6 touches so far this year, and that is in games where Carolina has been trying to move the ball and score points, so this isn’t like he is on a team that is trying to sit on a lead and run the clock out.

The former Ohio State Buckeye is in the final year of his contract and I would assume that he is not in the team’s long term plans. Likewise, I don’t think they are going to sit back and be passive in free agency after this season so they probably don’t expect any sort of compensatory pick for him in 2022.

Why not trade him away now to the Tennessee Titans and pick up some draft compensation, because the odds are that you are 14 games away from your season being over and having nothing to show for your 2nd round pick just a few years ago.
