Carolina Panthers trying to trade for secondary help
By Will Lomas
Panthers want to trade.
Carolina Panthers GM Marty Hurney decided to tear down the franchise and rebuild from the ground up this offseason.
That included cutting quarterback Cam Newton, hiring Matt Rhule to be the new coach, bringing in Teddy Bridgewater to be the (bridge) quarterback, and a curveball was Luke Keuchly’s retirement which only helps to lower expectations on the 2020 season.
Still, it appears that the Panthers don’t want to throw in the towel just yet.
A new report says that Carolina is actually calling teams now actively looking for help at defensive back.
It looks like the one thing that Matt Rhule wants to do this season is have a defense set up that will help his quarterback of the future have success down the line. All you have to do is look at the 2020 NFL Draft to see that because Rhule and Hurney spent every single draft pick on defensive players.
1st round: Derrick Brown, DT
2nd round: Yetur Gross-Matos, EDGE
2nd round: Jeremy Chinn, S
4th round: Troy Pride, CB
5th round: Kenny Robinson, S
6th round: Bravvion Roy, DT
7th round: Stantley Thomas-Olivier, CB
Spending a handful of Day 3 picks on DBs makes sense on paper, but it seems like it hasn’t worked well in practice. If they aren’t the answer, then it seems like this front office is not afraid to admit that and move on quickly.
If they are looking for young DBs with experience, then the Tennessee Titans have that in spades.
