How Will Compton helps David Long

Rashaan Evans and Jayon Brown are an exceptional tandem, but Evans was hurt in his rookie season and Brown was on the sideline often in 2019. Expecting either of them to play a full season is giving them a big benefit of a doubt.

David Long is very fun and he has a lot of Jayon Brown in his game, but he is also a guy who gets overexcited and doesn’t finish tackles the way he needs to. Being the first guy to the ball is great, but if he is in the hole vs someone like the Indianapolis Colts rookie Jonathan Taylor, I think he is going to miss that tackle more often than not.

Long needs to be paired with someone like Evans who can clean up his tackle after Long forces the runner to stop his feet. That is where a Compton-Long combination could shine.

Even if you are high on Nick Dzubnar, you have to admit that a guy with 4 tackles on defense in 5 years, isn’t someone that you want cleaning up for David Long. PFF credits Compton with 180 more tackles than Dzubnar in the same 5-year time frame.
