Titans host Will Compton on Wednesday and they should sign him
By Will Lomas
Will Compton is an ideal free agent signing for the Titans.
Last week we saw the Tennessee Titans sign Trevor Siemian to be their backup quarterback, and less than an hour ago they signed Jeremy McNichols.
Looking specifically at the Siemian signing, the Titans corresponding move was to release rookie quarterback Cole McDonald. The goal of a move like this is to:
1. Evaluate the upside of a rookie or unproven player
2. Weigh that upside vs the cost of a veteran
3. Determine whether the upside and cost-effectiveness of the rookie is worth more or less than the consistency of a veteran.
4. Make a decision on whether the rookie’s high ceiling is worth more than the veteran’s high floor.
After doing their cost analysis, the Titans decided that Siemian’s floor was worth more than McDonald’s ceiling and they pulled the trigger.
That is exactly what teams are looking at right now with two weeks until the season starts, and it is exactly why Will Compton makes sense for the Tennessee Titans.
Setting aside the bad PR it would bring if the Titans brought in a fan favorite for a workout and let him walk without signing him, the Titans need someone like Compton. His role with the Titans in the past is a linebacker who can flow side to side and impact the running game while also being able to play on special teams.
