K.J. Hamler, WR

Hamler was one of my favorite wide receivers in the 2020 NFL Draft class, and his deep speed combined with Drew Lock’s arm seemed like a match made in heaven.

However, it is difficult for rookies to come in and quickly master the nuances of what a receiver is asked to do. This is preseason it is even more difficult to hone your craft because if you have a new OC and you are a rookie 2nd string receiver, then you probably aren’t going to get much time on the field with the 1s.

Right now the report is that Hamler will miss a couple of weeks with a hamstring injury.

The instant reaction to this should be, “Oh no, a rookie receiver with hamstring injuries who wins with speed, is the nightmare scenario.” but it isn’t just because you are worried about his health. With two weeks off the field, at best you are going to get three days of padded practice before the first game of the season.

Is that enough time to build chemistry with your QB, and even if it is, will it be enough time to guarantee you are ready for action? It seems like a long shot.
