Wild Cards

These are guys who might be cut before the 80-man deadline who might surprise some people. Not surprising that they get released per se, but surprising they get released this early, such as a surprising cut in Philadelphia.

Tucker McCann, K

McCann is a UDFA Kicker out of Missouri. All signs point to McCann and incumbent Greg Joseph battling it out for the Kicker spot, but Titans’ team brass has mentioned they really are fond of Joseph. I believe McCann probably sticks around until final cut day, but I wouldn’t be all that surprised if the team has seen enough from Greg Joseph already to hand him the job.

Reggie Gilbert, OLB

Yes, the Titans just traded for Gilbert not even a year ago. But if, just to play Devil’s advocate, you get Clowney, do you really NEED Gilbert? If the Titans need to cut 8 players to sign Clowney, why not cut someone who plays the same position as Clowney? Caveat, if Clowney does NOT come to Nashville, I believe Gilbert stays.

Kobe Smith, NT

Smith, UDFA out of South Carolina, seems to be on the outside-looking-in as of now, just due to pure numbers. It’s no secret, the Titans’ defensive line depth is nothing to write home about, but Smith is still locked behind Daquan Jones, Larrell Murchison, and Joey Ivie. I could see Smith sticking around, but if the team likes what it sees from Ivie, Smith could fall victim to the numbers game.

Cameron Scarlett, RB

Scarlett is a rookie out of Stanford. The Titans depth behind starter Derrick Henry is questionable at best, so Scarlett seems to have a real shot. I could see him being a part of the training camp cutdown if he’s seen as the weakest link of the backup running backs. He did show some receiving prowess in his senior season at Stanford, so I’d be surprised if he’s gone this summer.

Cameron Batson, WR

It seems like I’ve been complaining about the Titans’ lack of depth at the Receiver position for years now. Unfortunately, Cam Batson does little to alleviate my concerns. If Clowney is coming to town, I could see Batson being one of the 8 who is cut. The Titans know what Batson is, so they could prefer to bring guys like Mason Kinsey, Kristian Wilkerson, and Nick Westbrook to camp instead.
