Where does the fit with the Cowboys and Saints?

Since Clowney seems to think the best two teams for him are the Cowboys and Saints, where does he fit with these two?

Obviously, there would either have to be major roster moves or Clowney would have to take a pay cut. Would he do that to play in Dallas or New Orleans? I don’t necessarily think so. He has been very adamant about getting paid this offseason and even turned down a pretty big offer from the Cleveland Browns.

It seems as if the only way for Clowney to play for either of these teams next season is if they want him enough to make major cap moves.

The Dallas Cowboys ranked in the bottom half of the league in sacks last season, so there’s really no question about where he would fit there. But he would have to be much more effective than he was last season with only 3 sacks. As far as where the team could make up cap space, the easiest move would be cutting Tyrone Crawford. Cutting Crawford would clear up $8 million for the team, and he only played 2 games last season. He just turned 30 years old, so replacing him with Clowney would for sure be an upgrade in production and age.

The New Orleans Saints finished second in sacks in 2019, and many of those came from Cameron Jordan who is still with the team for next season. A need for Clowney isn’t as clear with the Saints as they still have their top two pass rushers going into 2020. New Orleans clearing up the cap for another expensive free agent is much more complicated, so I wouldn’t expect to see him playing for the Saints next season.
