Titans trade away a current player on the roster

The NFL Draft comes out in full force with all its pandemonium and madness. Most of that is driven by the crazy trades and movement we see on draft day. While most draft day trades are pick exchanges, we do occasionally see players moved around in return for picks. I think the Titans will shock fans and move on from a player.

The Titans aren’t cap-strapped as some teams (see the Kansas City Chiefs) but the team is paying top dollar for some players that may not be worth it right now. Cornerback Malcolm Butler is scheduled to make $11 million in guarantees this season while Adam Humphries is on the books for $7 million guaranteed.

If Robinson was able to find a way to add some talent at wide receiver or cornerback, he may want to move those players to get additional cap space. If the Titans were to trade both players, they would be able to save nearly $10 million this season. That would allow the team to go after bigger name free agents left on the market as well as leverage the players for more picks.

We saw Robinson trade away Casey this offseason so it is not out of question that a player could be on the move. The Titans have more big contracts to hand out next season and will need to get surgical in how they handle existing contracts.

Tennessee may also decide to move a player that they have already decided to move on from. This past season, the Titans seemed to clearly send a message that they were willing to move on from Conklin

It would not be shocking if the Titans decide to move on from a rookie contract to get some compensation in return rather than letting them walk for nothing in free agency. The Titans should look to move Corey Davis, especially if they plan on taking advantage of the WR depth and talent in this draft class.

I expect Robinson to leverage the draft to get more wiggle room under the cap. Whether it’s a big salaried player like Butler or Humphries or a player on a rookie contract like Davis or Smith, I expect Robinson to make a move.
