Ryan Tannehill: Tennessee Titans, 1 year, $25 million
Remaining 2020 cap: $50 million
Their explanation:
"In just one year, Ryan Tannehill went from posting the third-worst passing grade PFF has ever seen in a single season with Miami in 2018 to posting the third-highest passing of the 2019 season with Tennessee. In Weeks 1 through 6 with Marcus Mariota starting, the Titans were 27th in EPA per pass play. From Week 7 and on with Tannehill starting, the Titans were second in EPA per pass play. He helped elevate the offense, and it’d be a shock to see Tennessee part ways with that."
My thoughts:
-It is hard to think that the Tennessee Titans will do this deal, but not for the reasons you think.
I think the Titans try to lock Tannehill down to a 4+ year deal because they know that after this next wave of QBs gets paid (Patrick Mahomes, Dak Prescott and whatever Drew Brees gets) the average annual salary for a QB will go up by another $5-10 million per year.
If Tannehill goes out on a one year deal and just tears it up again, then the Titans are going to be on the hook to give him a mega deal and a lot of that will have to be guaranteed.
Look at the record setting numbers that Kirk Cousins got when he hit free agency a few years ago. This would be like that, except Tannehill would presumably be coming off of an AFC Championship game appearance AND another great year.
