Marcus Mariota to Eagles

How it happens: Chargers trade for Cam Newton, Panthers sign Taysom Hill, Jaguars trade Nick Foles to Dolphins, Jaguars sign Andy Dalton, Patriots trade for Josh Rosen, Marcus Mariota signs with Eagles (two-year, $14 million deal).

If Marcus Mariota is going to take a clear backup job that leaves no chance for him to start outside of the No. 1 guy suffering an injury, backing up Carson Wentz in Philadelphia would be the perfect spot for him.

Here’s what Barnwell had to say about Mariota going to the Eagles.

"The Eagles couldn’t have anticipated Carson Wentz would suffer a concussion in the wild-card round, but the fact that he missed each of his two prior playoff runs via injury means backup quarterback is more of a priority in Philly than most other places. Mariota gives the Eagles a mobile, high-floor No. 2 option."

Despite being their franchise quarterback, Wentz’s health is always a concern.

Not only did the Eagles win a Super Bowl with Wentz on the shelf during the 2017 season, they also found themselves doomed in the wild card round last season after Wentz was forced to leave thanks to an illegal hit to his head.

As a result of injury concerns for their starter, the Eagles will undoubtedly be looking for a quality backup who could fill in for Wentz should those woes continue in 2020. Mariota would be the perfect answer to that need.

Granted, this isn’t the best scenario for him because an injury to Wentz is the only way Mariota would take over, but this is one of the better landing spots for him if a clear-cut backup job is all he can find.

The Eagles also have talent on the offensive side of the ball — as long as that talent can stay healthy — and head coach Doug Pederson has proven to be a solid offensive mind.
