In order to create more cap space for the 2020 offseason, the Tennessee Titans could restructure the contracts of some of their players.

The Tennessee Titans have a grand total of 22 free agents to make decisions on this offseason and will start out with roughly $55 million in cap space.

Of course, some of those free agents will be moving on, but bringing back the big four in quarterback Ryan Tannehill, running back Derrick Henry, right tackle Jack Conklin and cornerback Logan Ryan will be key to the Titans making another run in 2020.

Now, $55 million might seem like a lot, however when you consider those four players all had great seasons in 2019 and could command big deals, that money will dry up rather quickly.

In order to create more room to work with, Tennessee could opt to approach some of their players who are on long-term, big-money deals and ask them to restructure to help keep this team together.

Typically, a restructure involves taking salary and converting it into signing bonus money that can give a team cap space relief immediately, although that money will then be spread out and create a bigger cap hit in the remaining years of the deal.

Players can also take a straight-up pay cut if they choose, but that depends on the team having leverage over a player.

Let’s take a look at which Titans players could fall into either category to have their contracts restructured in 2020.
