Tennessee Titans are Chiefs head coach Andy Reid’s Kryptonite
Despite winning a lot of games during his head coaching career, Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid can’t figure out the Tennessee Titans.
Including the playoffs, Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has 220 wins as a head coach, but only one of those wins have come against the Tennessee Titans.
As the Chiefs and Titans prepare to meet in the AFC Championship Game on Sunday at 2:05 p.m. CST at Arrowhead Stadium, one can’t help but point out how Tennessee has had Reid’s number.
In nine career games against the Titans as a head coach with both the Philadelphia Eagles and Chiefs, Reid has a 1-8 record against the team from Nashville. With Philly, Reid was 0-4.
According to Blair Kerkhoff of the Kansas City Star, his win total and winning percentage against the Titans are both the worst of Reid’s career against any opponent he has faced.
Reid became the head coach of the Chiefs back in 2013 and finally got over the hump versus Tennessee that season. KC beat the Titans, 26-17, in Week 5, which is his only win in this matchup.
The Titans would exact revenge the following season with a Week 1 victory, 26-10, and it was the beginning of what is currently a four-game winning streak for Tennessee against Kansas City.
From there, the Titans would go on to beat Reid and the Chiefs in 2016 (Week 15, 19-17), 2017 (wild card round, 22-21), and most recently in 2019 (Week 10, 35-32).
In total, Reid is 1-4 against the Titans as the Chiefs’ head coach.
The 2017 and 2019 losses to Tennessee are most noteworthy because both involved some wild things happening.
KC owned a 21-3 lead going into the half of the 2017 wild card game, only to squander it to quarterback Marcus Mariota and Co., and Mariota even threw a touchdown pass to himself for good measure.
And, in 2019, quarterback Ryan Tannehill orchestrated a game-winning drive that culminated in him finding wide receiver Adam Humphries in the end zone with 23 seconds left.
The Chiefs would drive down the field on the next series and put themselves in position to tie the game, but defensive back Joshua Kalu thwarted their efforts when he blocked a field goal at the end of regulation.
Now, does this mean much in the grand scheme of things? No, because any given Sunday anything can happen in the NFL.
But Reid’s career struggles against the Titans are yet another interesting storyline ahead of the AFC Championship Game — and if you believe in trends, this is a troubling one for the Chiefs.
