New England Patriots

You read that right, the New England Patriots. While this might seem like a far-fetched scenario on the surface, I’d argue that it’s still more likely than the teams I’ve ruled out.

There have been rumblings during the season that 43-year-old quarterback Tom Brady might move on from the only team he’s ever known after this season, with ESPN’s Adam Schefter saying the Pats are the “least likely option” for Brady next season.

If Brady indeed moves on in free agency or retires, the Pats will be in the market for a QB and would instantly become Marcus Mariota’s best option to succeed in 2020.

Not only is the situation perfect for Mariota to start, but the system the Patriots have been running for Brady, which requires a lot of short throws for easy completions, would be great for Mariota.

If he signed with a Brady-less Pats, Mariota would have to compete with Jared Stidham and, if he’s still on the roster, Cody Kessler. I’d like to believe that Mariota could beat out both of those players, and if so, would find himself in a great position to win games and revive his career.

The Pats won’t have a crack at a top quarterback in next year’s draft, so Brady leaving in any capacity would have the franchise searching for a win-now, veteran solution. Mariota could certainly be that guy.
