Chargers trade rumors for the 2nd pick

While most of the league knew that Winston would go first to the Bucs, the Titans had not showed their cards early and garnered interest from other teams who similarly fell in love with Mariota’s prospects.

One interesting rumor was between the Chargers and Titans. In the lead up to the draft, Gary Myers from New York Daily News said, “The Chargers should trade Philip Rivers to the Jets for pick No. 6, and then send the Titans Nos. 6 and 17 for No. 2 to pick Marcus Mariota. San Diego worked out Mariota.”

While the Chargers denied those rumors, it’s an interesting prospect for both teams. With the sixth pick, the Titans could have drafted Todd Gurley and brought in a dynamic 1-2 punch all of a sudden or used the additional picks to boost their defensive lineup with Leonard Williams or Marcus Peters.

The Chargers could have revamped their team after falling to third in the standing in the AFC West. The feeling that Rivers was washed up arose, given that his talented team couldn’t muster up more wins. With the Chiefs and Broncos showing more promise, it would have been an easy out for the Chargers to move on from Rivers and quickly rebuild and remain competitive.
