Top PFF grades: Defense

Here were the highest-graded Titans defenders from Week 7.

Notes

-In his NFL debut, defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons was the highest-graded Titans defender against the Chargers. Simmons totaled four tackles (two for loss) and his first-career sack in the NFL. Simmons was a force up the middle, consistently getting push on whoever was blocking. He made a big play at the end of regulation to burst through the hole Melvin Gordon was trying to run through, which forced Gordon to change his path en route to an eventual game-sealing fumble that was forced by Wesley Woodyard and recovered by Jurrell Casey.

-Defensive tackle DaQuan Jones continues his stellar 2019 season for the Titans. He totaled two tackles (one for loss) and continues to be an asset against the run this season. I expect Jones’ season to get even better with Simmons playing next to him, as now defenses have to account for and try to focus extra attention on stopping both Big Jeff and Jurrell Casey on either side of him.

-Edge rusher Cameron Wake returned in Week 7 after missing the last two games and made an immediate impact. While he only totaled one QB hit, Wake was getting pressure on Philip Rivers and was the difference-maker the Titans were missing against the Buffalo Bills and Denver Broncos.

-Logan Ryan was all over the field in Week 7, which has been the case all season. An argument can easily be made that he has been the Titans’ best corner in 2019. Ryan totaled eight tackles (five solo), three passes defensed and he forced a fumble.

-Jurrell Casey completes the trifecta of all three of Tennessee’s defensive lineman making the cut of the top-five graded defenders. While Casey didn’t record any tackles, he did provide help to a run defense that held the Chargers to less than two yards per carry. He also recovered the fumble by Gordon that sealed the Titans’ win over the Chargers.
