NFL power rankings Week 3: Titans fall back to earth after loss to Colts
19. Detroit Lions (1-0-1)
The Detroit Lions had a miserable start to the season after a Week 1 game with the Arizona Cardinals saw Detroit blow a lead and finish with a tie. The disappointing finish was also a result of a poorly-timed timeout by offensive coordinator, Darrell Bevell.
The Lions had to put that game behind them and focus on the Chargers in Week 2, and that they did. It wasn’t pretty, but the Lions hung around long enough to upset a team that many feel is a favorite to make a deep run into the playoffs.
Down 10-6 in the fourth quarter, Matthew Stafford found Kenny Golladay on a 31-yard touchdown strike that put the Lions up 13-10. On the next drive, Phillip Rivers’ pass to Keenan Allen was intercepted by Darius Slay, sealing the improbable win for the Lions.
Things don’t get any easier for the Lions next week. Another one of the league’s best, the Philadelphia Eagles, await the Lions for what will be a tough road game for Matt Patricia’s squad. Detroit will need a similar effort from its defense in Week 3 to remain undefeated.
