Tennessee Titans: 9 takeaways from Week 1 win over Browns
Mariota’s supporting cast is legit
Mariota had himself a strong performance in this game with some help from his supporting cast.
Even without Lewan and Pamphile, Mariota had time in the pocket to throw, which leads us to believe that things will only get better once the Titans O-line is at full strength.
Furthermore, he got some serious help from the playmakers around him. Brown made things happen on a short pass that turned into a 51-yard gain, and we also can’t forget the blocking and run that turned a short Henry catch into a 75-yard touchdown play.
The Titans scored 43 points and had a solid game through the air thanks to Brown, Walker, and Henry, and Mariota was barely able to use who we thought would be a his top two options in Corey Davis and Adam Humphries. Combined, Davis and Humphries totaled one catch for five yards.
Most of that had to do with the gameplan and good coverage from Denzel Ward on Davis, but it does go to show you just how many weapons Mariota has at his disposal. After all, Brown is supposed to be the No. 4 option in the passing game, and he finished as the top receiver with 100 yards.
Together with his offensive line, running back, and the weapons he has through the air, Mariota is setup for quite the season in 2019. And if he can answer the bell, there’s no telling just how good this Titans team can be.
