The Tennessee Titans have named five captains for the 2019 season.

The Tennessee Titans players have elected five of their teammates to be captains for the team in 2019.

Not to be confused with weekly captains that are chosen by coaches, these captains are for the entire season. According to Jim Wyatt of Titans Online, the five captains are as follows.

QB Marcus Mariota

S Kevin Byard

C Ben Jones

DL Jurrell Casey

LB Wesley Woodyard

Now in his fifth season, Mariota has been a captain in each year of his career. This is Casey’s sixth time being a captain, while Woodyard has earned the honor in every year of his career dating back to 2008.

Another interesting note about Woodyard’s experience as a captain comes from The Athletic’s John Glennon, who notes that the veteran linebacker has been a captain for 17 straight years, starting in his senior year of high school.

The two newcomers to this list, Byard and Jones, both reacted to the honor of being named season-long captains, also per Wyatt.

Jones:

"“It means my teammates respect what I do on and off the field,” Jones said. “It’s an honor to be voted by the players. We have a lot of guys who have played a lot of football in this league, so it’s a great honor.”"

Byard:

"“It is an incredible honor to be voted by my peers to be captain,” said Byard, who was a captain in high school and in college at MTSU as well. “It is special I feel like, that guys trust in my leadership abilities and it’s something I am going to continue to do. It is not like I am going to change now. I want to try and keep leading this group of men in the right direction and try and lead us to a Super Bowl.”"

Another thing Jones and Byard have in common? They both got paid prior to the start of the regular season.

Tennessee paid Byard with a record-setting contract extension that made him the highest-paid safety in NFL history. More recently, Jones was given a two-year extension that will keep him with the team through the 2021 season.

These Titans begin their regular season on Sunday, September 8th when they travel to Cleveland to take on the Browns.
