3 starting receivers
Perhaps one of the bigger takeaways is the fact that the Tennessee Titans have three starting receivers listed in Corey Davis, Adam Humphries and Taywan Taylor. We’ll get to Taylor being over Tajae Sharpe in a minute.
This could mean the Titans will be running more three-receiver sets, which is something we’d like to see the offense do in 2019. The Titans have been running two tights ends quite often in recent years, so this would be a smart move to utilize some of the team’s new weapons more.
Of course, we will still see two tight ends used in this offense, and as we noted previously, opposing defenses may challenge two tight end sets by daring offenses to run the ball against their nickel looks.
But if the Titans want to improve a passing attack that ranked 29th in the NFL last season, giving Mariota more options in the passing game at receiver would be the way to get it done.
Eventually, we’d expect to see rookie A.J. Brown emerge as the third starting receiver, but for now he’s near the bottom of the depth chart at the position. Hopefully he can stay healthy for the rest of the team’s practices and through the preseason in order to make that happen.
If this holds up, we’re already liking the different look offensive coordinator Arthur Smith is giving us. As long as Mariota is healthy, all the pieces are in place for him to have one of his best seasons yet behind center.
