Anthony Firkser not there yet

The biggest role of a No. 2 and No. 3 tight end is to block, which is why tight end MyCole
Pruitt saw a lot of the field for the Tennessee Titans last season. The thought was that fellow tight end Anthony Firkser would surpass him on the depth chart in 2019, but that isn’t the case thus far.

We know Firkser is a solid pass-catcher, and he is certainly superior to Pruitt in that regard. However, the biggest concern for the team’s No. 3 tight end will still be blocking. After all, both the No. 1 and No. 2 tight ends, Delanie Walker and Jonnu Smith, are great and good pass-catchers, respectively.

As I wrote about in an earlier article, defensive coordinators may challenge teams running two tight end sets to run the ball on their nickel defense, thus having two tight ends who can block effectively becomes even more important.

It appears Firkser still has a way to go in order to prove he can hang with his blocking, and Pruitt will remain atop Firkser on the depth chart until that happens.

If Firkser wants to see more snaps in 2019, he’ll have to get his blocking nailed down or else he may end up seeing more time on the bench than not. It would be invaluable to the Titans’ offense if a good receiving tight end like Firkser could also be a good blocker to help add some unpredictability to what the team is doing.
