Alright, so why would the Tennessee Titans have any interest in Thompson?

Right now we know that the Titans plan on putting Amani Hooker on the field early in some position. It has been heavily speculated that due to his role in college as a safety/nickel hybrid, that Dean Pees and Kerry Coombs believe that he can get some reps in the NFL as a slot cornerback.

One reason we know that for sure is because of a quote in Jim Wyatt’s mailbag from today. This is part of quote in response to someone expressing concern about Dane Cruikshank not playing much in 2018:

"With that said, Amani Hooker really impressed me this offseason, and from the look of things he’s going to have a chance to get on the field early this fall if he keeps it up. There’s enough room on the roster for four – maybe five –safeties, so that would mean Byard, Vaccaro, Hooker and Cruikshank make it with possibly another spot up for grabs."

This is how Wyatt ended his mailbag, which is usually reserved for questions that he finds the most interesting. Currently behind those four the Titans have: Damon Webb, JoJo Tillery, LaDarius Wiley, and Kareem Orr.

There isn’t really a standout from that group that you would assume is NFL ready, and I don’t think that they need a guy who is purely a special teamer there either.

After spending picks on D’Andre Walker and David Long, and signing athletic guys with upside like Alex Barnes and Derick Roberson in UDFA the Titans should have a healthy batch of special teams options.

Could the Titans plan on using that spot on Jalen Thompson?
