How long will we wait for A.J. Brown to break out?

Boom or Bust: A.J. Brown #123 overall, WR54

Recent stats, 2018 (college) 85 rec., 1,320 receiving yards, 6 TD

I think Brown is going to be a very good player, but he is a boom or bust fantasy football prospect for two big reasons.

First of all, rookie receivers are almost impossible to get a good handle on but A.J. Brown is going to be even harder.

The majority of his snaps at the college level came inside in the slot, but in the NFL he is going to primarily play on the boundary. With a limited sample size at the college level and during the preseason you are going to have to figure out if you are buying into the hype or not because he is going to go earlier than most think in your drafts.

Secondly, the bulk of his big plays come from his YAC. Brown is the prototypical (running back at receiver) type of player who runs so well through arm tackles and leaves DBs collecting their ankles in the open field.

How is he going to handle better competition and tackling at the NFL level? Can he still take a 3-yard quick slant and take it 20-yards consistently? What about taking a screen 70+ yards for a TD?

If he can, then the Tennessee Titans can attack every level of the field and he will be a huge part of the offense. If not then he could end up with a Tajae Sharpe level rookie season and see a bulk of his targets go to guys like Davis, Humphries, Walker, and Henry.
