Tennessee Titans should swap picks for a veteran

Brandon Scherff RG, Washington Redskins

I firmly believe that the only reason to spend a lot of money for a guard is if you believe in both the talent of the player and the fit in your scheme. This isn’t a position where you can just slide in the “best player available” because this is about fit.

If you are running a zone scheme you need athletic linemen, they have to be able to reach block at a high level or else half of your playbook just disappears.

Not only is Scherff athletic, but he is a freak athlete. Look at his RAS card:

I was like oh those numbers look great and then I saw that Scherff ran a 7.18 3-cone drill! To put that in perspective, Garrett Bradbury is being raved about as the most athletic center prospect people have ever seen and he ran a 7.41.

And that isn’t a slight to Bradbury, 7.41 is excellent, but 7.18 is legendary.

The Washington Redskins are in one of the worst situations of any team in the NFL. Short term, they are paying a lot of money for Alex Smith who may never play football again. They could go out and draft a quarterback, but they are picking 15th which means they either need to make a huge move up or settle for drafting a QB in an area where you rarely find success at QB.

They could trade for Josh Rosen I guess, but what happens in a year when they fire Jay Gruden because he has another mediocre team. What if the new coach doesn’t want Rosen? Then you are stuck without a QB for the third year in a row?

I don’t have any idea how they dig themselves out of this hole, but the best path may be down. Tank this season, get rid of any player with value and accrue some assets. Try to grab your QB in the 2020 draft and then supplement the offense with free agents and other high draft picks over the offseason.

You can’t do that if you are paying a guard top-end money or if you lose him in free agency for a 4th round comp pick in 2021.
