Round 2

51st overall pick: Erik McCoy C, Texas A&M

There is no player in the 2019 NFL draft who has risen more quietly than Texas A&M center Erik McCoy.

If you were checking mock drafts and projections after the year, if you could even find McCoy’s name it was as a day three player. Then, people started to actually watch him.

While it wasn’t always pretty, McCoy just consistently won matchups with some of the best talent in the country. This year alone he went against Quinnen Williams, Christian Wilkins, Jeffery Simmons, and Derrick Brown (2020). In those matchups he gave up a combined zero sacks!

Much like Jack Conklin did during his college career, he stood up against the best and he beat them. Then he followed that up with testing like a great athlete at the combine, so when you put that together you are going to get a top-32 prospect right?

Well, here is the thing. It is very rare that a team spends a first round picks on an interior offensive lineman as it is, but when you are considered the second best center in the class it makes it even harder to crack that barrier.

Look no further than last year when everyone screamed that Will Hernandez was going to be a first round pick, only to see him slip to the second round. Much like tight end and running back, it is a position that teams have shown they can successfully draft on Day 2 and beyond so unless you are truly special you are going to have a tough time getting that five year contract.

For the Tennessee Titans, all they should be concerned about in round two is finding a player who shows on film that they can be dominant in what they will be asked to do in Nashville. McCoy is that guy, showing that he could come in and start at center or right guard for an NFL team immediately and that he could thrive in a ZBS.

Defensive player I would have considered here: Jerry Tillery DL, Notre Dame

Next. 3rd round pick. dark
