3rd wave: Lottery tickets and backups

There is talent every year that falls to this wave, but you are looking at a lot of guys who have clear issues and limitations.

I view this wave as a way to patch holes in case the draft comes and you look around at 19 and all the players you like are off the board but there is a clearly talented player that you can’t afford to trade down and miss.

Imagine if Luke Keuchly was in this year’s class. The Titans don’t need a linebacker, but everyone needs a Luke Keuchly so the Titans may just take him and worry about the issues that come with that later.

So, to make sure that every hole is at least ready for competition these are the two players I think make sense.

Houston Texans DL Christian Covington is someone that Mike Vrabel coached when he was the DC in Houston and the Titans need to at least try to shake things up on the defensive line this year. With Bennie Logan gone this could be the nose tackle that replaces him.

The position that keeps getting attention in drafts gets partially solved here, not with Luke Stocker but with Baltimore Ravens TE Maxx Williams.

On paper Williams has a lot to like as a TE2/3, at 6’4, 252 lb. he has the size to play inline. Meanwhile he tested like a pretty explosive prospect, so why not take a flier on him and let him compete with Anthony Firkser for that “other” TE job.
