Tennessee Titans: Predictions for pending free agents
By Max Dambach
Tye Smith CB
Smith was nothing more than a depth player for the Titans this season on a one-year contract. With Johnathan Cyprien returning from injury, the Titans will have less need for Smith, but they could bring him back as a cheap depth option that has value on special teams.
Verdict: Release
David Fluellen RB
Fluellen has stuck around with the Titans as a backup running back for several years now. He spent a couple years on the practice squad before being promoted to the active roster for the last two seasons. Fluellen has worked hard to earn a spot on this team, but has less than 40 yards rushing over the last two seasons and ended 2018 on IR. The Titans will probably look for a younger option with upside without injury concerns in the draft or free agency.
Verdict: Release
Austin Davis, QB
The Titans prefer to keep two quarterbacks on the roster, but when Mariota and Gabbert were both injured at various points and the Titans had to sign a third quarterback in Austin Davis. Davis has always been a journeyman quarterback and the Titans would be better suited sticking with Mariota and Gabbert in 2019.
Verdict: Release
Bennie Logan, DT
Logan’s numbers went down across the board in 2019 and he never was more than a role-player for the Titans defense. At age 29 with a solid body of work, Logan will probably want one more big contract that he will likely need to find elsewhere. The Titans defensive line needs an injection of talent in a big way, so I expect the Titans to make a big move in free agency or the draft to beef up the defensive front.
Verdict: Release
Kevin Pamphile, OG
Pamphile was signed to a one-year contract to try and compete with Quinton Spain, but he could not unseat Spain and was outperformed by Corey Levin on a rookie contract. I could see the Titans taking a shot at a Day 2 offensive line prospect to compete along the interior of the line, which makes Pamphile expendable.
Verdict: Release
Nate Palmer, ILB
Palmer has failed to make much of an impact in his two seasons with the Titans. With Wesley Woodyard, Jayon Brown, and Rashaan Evans on board for 2019, Palmer is likely expendable for the Titans.
Verdict: Release
